Sleep Apnea/Oral Appliances

Woman covering ears while husband snoresWe think sleep should be considered a natural resource. It's that important. We need sleep to be able to give our brains a break. Our brains need a break to rest and prepare for the days ahead. If you lose 15 minutes of sleep here or there, it's no big deal. However, if you lose a lot of sleep, it is a serious health issue. There is a condition that many of our patients have called sleep apnea. Sleep apnea causes you to miss sleep, it can cause health problems you might have to get worse, and it can even be fatal. There are a lot of treatment options available for people with sleep apnea. Let Zhou Dental Care give you some information about sleep apnea and its treatments.

Sleep Apnea Symptoms

Sleep apnea is one of the sleep disorders that humans can suffer from. When you have sleep apnea, you stop breathing during the night. You don't stop breathing once, but several times over - all through the night. Your body will restart your breathing when you stop, but it has to wake you up to do it. That means your body cannot rest efficiently. You may not be aware of your sleep apnea, but there are signs your partner might notice. You may snore really loudly. Your partner might have woken you up because you stopped breathing. You may wake up exhausted, even if you think you slept through the whole night. You might also wake up with a headache every day. You may fall asleep sitting up at meetings, watching TV with your partner, or even when you're waiting in line. All of these are signs of sleep apnea.

Some people are more susceptible to getting sleep apnea than other people are. If you are obese, you have a higher risk of sleep apnea than someone who is not obese. If your neck size is 17 inches around or greater, your risk is increased as well. People who are middle aged and older have an increased risk, and men are more likely to have it than women. If you have high blood pressure, you may also have sleep apnea.

Treatment

Several treatments exist for people with sleep apnea. Usually treatments help you fall asleep and stay asleep at night by giving you plenty of oxygen, or they make it easier for you to breathe while you are sleeping. Breathing masks allow you to get more oxygen during sleep, but many people don't like wearing a mask at night. There are surgical procedures to reduce the amount of tissue in your throat, helping your sleep apnea. We can make you an oral appliance to pull your jaw forward while you sleep and allow you to breathe more easily. Each person and each case of sleep apnea is different.
