There are lots of yummy things in pies and cakes we call fillings. We really love fillings, any kind of fillings. However, as practitioners, we know that if you have too much of one kind of filling, you might have to get another kind of filling - that doesn't taste very good. Your dessert fillings can actually lead to needing dental fillings. While our dental fillings don't taste good, they can save your teeth, which we love. If you aren't sure what fillings are, and how they are used, we'd love to tell you. Give Zhou Dental Care a minute to tell you more about fillings and why they are so important to your overall dental health.
Fillings Are Important
We would love to talk to you all day about the amazing fillings we love from inside desserts, however, those kinds of fillings really don't help your teeth. Dental fillings do. Dental fillings are one of the best ways we have to fix your teeth when they are diseased or damaged because of bacteria that causes tooth decay. Another name for tooth decay is cavities. Cavities happen because the bacteria that is in your mouth normally begins to bore holes into your tooth enamel. Brushing and flossing helps to rid your mouth of your bacteria. However, if you don't brush or floss regularly, you may get a cavity or two. If you do nothing, over time, the bacteria will continue to eat a hole in your tooth, right down to the tooth pulp. When the bacteria get to the tooth pulp, you will begin to feel pain from the infection. The infection from your tooth can also move to other teeth as well, and can even cause trouble for your body as a whole.
This is where fillings come in. When we find a cavity, we can immediately fix it. When we fill a cavity, it prevents the bacteria from continuing to bore through the tooth enamel. The smaller the cavity is, the smaller the filling will be. We want to catch cavities early, before they have a chance to make a large hole. Large holes in your teeth lead to large fillings, which work to make the tooth weaker.
Fillings can be made of several different materials. In the past, we used to use silver amalgam fillings. Silver amalgam was used for decades. Today, however, silver amalgam fillings are not often used. Decades ago, silver amalgam fillings contained mercury, which is a poison. Today's silver amalgam fillings don't have mercury, but many people don't want to use the silver fillings, because they are visible. Today, the majority of our patients prefer to use composite fillings, which can match the color of your natural teeth. People want their teeth to match perfectly, so composite fillings may be the way to go for you as well.
