Dentistry for Kids

Young girl brushing her teethJust like other kinds of medicine, people who go into dentistry can specialize. Some dentists choose oral surgery for their field. Others want to go into dentistry to care for older adults. The lucky ones decide to go into pediatric dentistry - which means they work with children (and their parents) all day every day. This branch of dentistry means we get to take care of the future and have a lot of fun doing it. You might not know it, but dental care is just as important for children as it is for adults. Let Zhou Dental Care take a few minutes to discuss why dental care is vital for the health of a child’s mouth.

The Importance of Children’s Dentistry

People often see children’s baby teeth as just a precursor to their permanent teeth, so they don’t think taking children to the dentist is as important as making sure older children and adults go. However, research shows that children who have poor oral hygiene in childhood go on to have problems with their oral health in adulthood. If children’s oral health is poor, their permanent teeth could come in with cavities, they could have gum disease, or their permanent teeth may not come in. We’ve even had to pull baby teeth because they were so badly diseased they were causing infections. No one wants that kind of future for their child.

One reason we love children’s dentistry is because we have ways to talk to children and their parents about the importance of dental care from the time they are born into adulthood. You can help by bringing your children in to see us twice a year, making sure they eat a balanced diet, and making sure they brush and floss twice a day every day. You are helping us help your child have a great smile for years to come.

What Happens During a Child’s Dental Visit?

Many of the procedures we use during a child’s dental visit will look familiar to you, except they are more fun at a children’s dentist. The most important thing to us is that your child is comfortable and happy when they leave us after a checkup. The last thing that we want is for your child to be worried about coming in, because that fear could stay with them.

Because we want your child to be comfortable, there are several things we do. The first time you visit, we spend some time talking with your child. We want to make them feel at ease. Then, we will check their teeth, their mouth structures and their gums, to make sure they are forming and coming in the right way. We will talk to you and to them (depending on their age) about brushing their teeth and flossing. We will clean their teeth beautifully, and then we’ll give them a little gift for coming to see us. We want your child to leave happy, and want to come back to visit. This is also the time for you to ask questions that have been bugging you about caring for your child’s teeth.
