We love our patients who come and see us on a regular basis, because that helps us take care of their teeth better. However, there are times that a regular dental checkup alone isn't enough to thoroughly care for your teeth. In order to make sure that your gums are as healthy as possible, you might need some additional care. Your gums might need extra care, called periodontal care, to make sure they are free of gum disease, or that your gum disease is treated effectively. Not sure what we're talking about? Give Zhou Dental Care a minute to talk to you about periodontal care.
Why Are Gums So Important?
You might think that gums are not as important as your teeth, but in fact, gums are just as important as your teeth. Gums support and feed your teeth, so your teeth could not stay in your mouth without your healthy gums. We like to think of your gums as the framework for your mouth and structures for your teeth and jawbone. Your gums work to protect your teeth and make sure they are getting enough blood. We aren't sure if you know this, but gums are really important for your whole mouth. Your gums are like the framing of your house. It is a structure that holds the rest of your house up. All of the different pieces of your house tie into the framework. Your gums act like the framework for your house between your teeth and your jawbone. The gums protect your teeth and nourish them with the nutrients in your blood. Because your gums are so important, when they get a disease, your whole mouth is affected.
What Can Happen to Gums?
You might have known that there's bacteria in your mouth all the time. If there's enough of the bacteria in your mouth, it can cause not only cavities, but gum disease as well. Usually, you get rid of a lot of the bacteria by brushing, flossing and eating a balanced diet. You could get gum disease because your oral hygiene isn't as good as it could be. You might also be susceptible to gum disease because of genetics.
There are three stages of gum disease. The first stage is called gingivitis. We can treat gingivitis easily. People who have gingivitis may notice their gums are swollen and bleeding. If you don't do anything with your stage one periodontal disease, it will eventually progress to stages two and three. Stages two and three are called periodontitis. Once you get to stages two and three, we can treat your gum disease, but we can't cure it. If you don't get gum disease treated, you could lose both your teeth and your gum tissue.
How We Care for Your Gums
We can begin to treat your gum disease with periodontal cleaning, which is a deep cleaning of your gums at the gumline. It will rid your gums of the infection. However, you will have to continue to have your teeth deep cleaned to keep the infection at bay. That's because periodontal disease creates spaces - or pockets - between teeth and gums. You have to keep your gums as clean as possible, which is where we come in. We will clean out your pockets, and keep your gums free of infection.
